I have a very large program, 1.25MB on disc, compiled under Domain/IX on 9.5 and running on a 4MB DN3000. It uses a lot of heap - often between 2 and 3MB - so on my machine it pages a lot. Looking for ways to speed the program up I decided to try using the UNIX strip command on the image. I knew it shouldn't have any effect on the speed, but I thought I'd see if it did make it run any faster. The size went down to 1.02MB which is nice but pretty irrelevant, but the program ran SLOWER! Here are some timings for one set of tests: CPU secs Elapsed time CPU usage Page faults unstripped 5801 1:43:55 93% 49628 stripped 6864 2:01:56 93% 54159 % increase 18 17 0 9 Can anyone explain this phenomemon? --- John Richards Tel: +44 225 444700 Praxis Systems plc Telex: 445848 PRAXIS G 20 Manvers Street, Bath, BA1 1PX, U.K. Fax: +44 225 65205 mcvax!ukc!praxis!johnr johnr%praxis.uucp@ukc.ac.uk John Richards
