I would like to connect an Apollo workstation to VAX/VMS via ethernet and achieve the following capabilities: a) remote file system: at least my own VMS directory should be mountable as a subdirectory on the apollo with read and write access. (Yes I know about the problems with loading apollo programs over NFS. I am after backup, printer, and mail access.) b) remote commands: I would like to be able to issue commands on the VMS system with input data coming from the apollo and output coming back to the apollo. c) remote process communication: I would like to be able to communicate between a process running on the apollo and one running under VMS. I need at least a) and would like b) and c). I have literature on an apollo product called VAX/Access and would like to converse with anyone who has had experience with it. Will this product meet my needs? Are there any other similar products I should look into? The VMS system currently has Decnet/Ethernet but no TCP/IP, which is a requirement for VAX/Access. I understand TCP/IP will coexist with Decnet. One quote on TCP/IP software from Network Fusion is $3900US. Does anyone know of cheap/free TCP/IP software for VMS? NFS software for VMS? Thank you in advance to all who reply. Thanks also to those who replied to my last posting (new apollo user).

There is some version of public domain TCP/IP software for VMS which comes out of CMU and is in use here at MIT. It currently runs under VMS rev 4, but not rev 5. It will probably be updated for rev 5 when CMU gets their copy, but they refuse to commit themselves to doing the update as they are quite busy enough with their own work. I don't know much more about it, but you could contact Ron Hoffmann (RON@BITSY.MIT.EDU or HOFFMANN@ATHENA.MIT.EDU), one of the MIT campus network gurus, for more info. -- David Krowitz krowitz@richter.mit.edu (18.83.0.109) krowitz%richter@eddie.mit.edu krowitz%richter@athena.mit.edu krowitz%richter.mit.edu@mitvma.bitnet (in order of decreasing preference)
