In a few weeks, I will be working on installing a very heterogenous network at the Banff Fine Arts Centre Computer Media Lab. Needless to say, our equipment will be chosen for what we can get and does what we want, *not* how well it connects to everything else. It's more or less a side issue. All the same, we will be stuck with sysadminning this mess, and moving files and every other such thing, and so I ask: Who has set up a highly heterogenous network before ? What protocols did you use ? What cabling did you run it over ? What was the most common problem and/or biggest headache you had with the thing ? Lack of vendor knowledge/support ? Having to write custom hacks between things ? Any any any experiences at all. What we are thinking of doing is installing AppleShare for what is likely to be a fair number of Macs, an Ethernet for everything else, and letting everything talk its own Ethernet protocol as it likes. For highest-level connectivity, we were thinking of Apollo NCS, where it's available, just because its able to move files between almost anything, and can deal with a zillion protocol types. Good idea ? Anyone who's ever hooked up three or more incompatible things please help.:-) Please mail and I will summarize results, if enough and interesting. -- Craig Hubley craig@gpu.utcs.toronto.edu -- Craig Hubley ------------------------------------- craig@gpu.utcs.toronto.edu "Lead, follow, or get out of the way" mnetor!utgpu!craig@uunet.UU.NET ------------------------------------- {allegra,bnr-vpa,cbosgd,decvax,ihnp4,mnetor,utzoo,utcsri}!utgpu!craig
