[comp.sys.apollo] Results of request for help

bgo@pbhya.PacBell.COM (Bud Odekirk) (09/01/88)

About a month ago I posted a message requesting information about 3 topics,
   1. OA package for Domain/IX,
   2. Porting readnews to Apollo
   3. A program that converts DPSS mail to the UNIX format.

I received numerous responses, but most of them were from people that were
looking for information about the same things. Thanks to everyone that
responded.

#1. Does anyone know of a good office automation package that has been ported
# to an Apollo System ? We are looking for one that has word processing,
# calendaring, spread sheet, graphic capabilities, electronic mail, and
# a database manager.

July's Unix Review has an article comparing some Office Automation
(OA?) products. There is also a magazine devoted to this topic,
"Patricia Seybold's Office Automation Newsletter".

Have a look at Alis from:
    Applix, Inc.
    112 Turnpike Road
    Westboro, MA 01581
    (617) 870-0300

It has all of the things you ask for in a nicely integrated package. It also
runs on a lot of other systems, too. Several groups here at Boeing use it and
we're trying to get it for my group as well. I have not used it, just drooled
over the sales brochures!

#2. We are trying to get UNIX readnews (rn) to work on our system, but so far
# have been unsuccessful. Any help would be appreciated.

It pretty much just works. You have to fool around a bit to eliminate
contention for the active file. I have some patches around here somewhere,
or you could try Tim Giebelhaus. Send me mail if you can't figure it out.

#3. Has anyone written a shell script that will convert DPSS mail to to UNIX
# mail format. I have written one that works, but it is kind of archaic.

I have a program that does this. I'll send it if you want.
(Jim Rees I would like a copy of the program, I tried to send you mail, but
it was returned. Thanks in advance.)
