[comp.sys.apollo] gprlib is now extra-cost option

I hate to get in a snit before verifying this statement, but if true,
it is really upsetting. It may not be a lot of money (until you
multiply by 40) but the philosophy is all wrong. At least you knew
that if you wrote a graphics program, another Apollo site would be
able to run it (already not true with 3D GMR). This is one of the
successes of the Macintosh. With the graphics unbundled, other sites
will more often choose to use different underlying graphics packages--
leading to incompatibilities between sites, less software
compatibility, and therefore less software.

Besides which, you don't find out you don't have it until you need it.
Then it is months before we can get it through our purchasing system.

Don't get in a snit Dennis, gprlib is NOT unbundled, it is still part of
standard distribution. Casey was refering to gmrlib (2D GMR), which IS
now unbundled. Therefore now both GMR products (2D & 3D) are extra cost
optional products. Maybe Apollo is doing this because they want to push
other graphics packages like GKS & Phigs. Any Apollo marketing types care
to comment?

As the Display Manager is now based upon gprlib, gprlib HAS to be part of
the standard distribution. So as long as the DM is around, you can count
on gprlib. (Oops, did I hear sombody say "X Windows"?)

You must mean some other library than gprlib (gmrlib is not present on my SR10
system, but gprlib most certainly is). An amazing amount of software,
including the Display Manager, wouldn't work without GPRLIB around.
