Has anyone any comments on Apollo's new Omniback 8mm tape backup system that uses NCS ??? Is it shipping yet, and if so, is it still only for MC68XXX machines ??? (I'd like it sitting on my 10000 to get a faster data transfer rate). ian -- Ian Hoyle /\/\ Computer Systems Superintendent / / /\ BHP Melbourne Research Laboratories / / / \ 245 Wellington Rd, Mulgrave, 3170 / / / /\ \ AUSTRALIA \ \/ / / / \ / / / Phone : +61-03-560-7066 \/\/\/ ACSnet : ianh@merlin.bhpmrl.oz Internet: ianh%merlin.bhpmrl.oz@uunet.uu.net

The only comment I have about the Omniback 8mm tape backup stuff is to say that it is horribly over priced. Most other vendors quoted prices around 30% as much (we are an educational institution so expect to pay a little more than that). I hope their software makes a big difference or they aren't likely to sell too many of these. If you just have one DN10000 I don't think the software that they ship will simplify your life enough to make up for the cost. I'd stay away from it. If you have a large network, then the software might be worth it, but I'd ask to try it out first. James Conley Indiana University Computer Science jec@iuvax.cs.indiana.edu

Apollo quoted us a list price of $11,000 for their version of the Exabyte 8mm tape drive housed in an external shoebox, including the controller and the Omniback software. The current list prices quoted to us from Workstation Solutions and Danford were about $7,000 and $8,000 respectively, including controllers. Apollo is not yet shipping their drive ... we were told it would be available in May, that it would require SR10, and that only Omniback could be used with the drive (tar, wbak/rbak, rwmt will not work according to our sales office). -- David Krowitz krowitz@richter.mit.edu (18.83.0.109) krowitz%richter@eddie.mit.edu krowitz%richter@athena.mit.edu krowitz%richter.mit.edu@mitvma.bitnet (in order of decreasing preference)

The literature I received from my salesman says both the 8mm drive and OmniBack are available 74 days ARO for 3500/3550/4500, and August 1 for 10000. The 8mm tape drive can be ordered without OmniBack. This cuts off about $ 2000 from the list price. I was told by an Apollo technical representative with the local sales office that rwmt/wbak/rbak are supported. The literature does say SR10.1 is required. We are planning to order the tape drive without OmniBack, since we will only be backing up one ring net. The list price for the drive and expansion box (required) is $ 7500.
