[comp.sys.apollo] Minimal disk configuration for SR9.x on DN3xx

george@hyper.lap.upenn.edu (George "Sir Lleb" Zipperlen) (04/06/89)

I'm trying to squeeze some useful disk space out of all those
old 70Mb winchesters on DN300s.

First (a long shot):
Is there any way to get a node to boot diskless, and then mount
a drive without manual intervention?

Second (since I don't have much hope for the above):
What is the minimum that is required to be *physically* resident
on disk, with the rest being soft links? I'm asking for sr9.7
info, since this kind of thing is handled much better under sr10,
and these dn300s with their limited memory will probably be kept
at sr9.

My guess is:
    /bscom
    /lib
    /registry (local)
    /sau2
    /sys
    /sys/address_families
    /sys/apollo_logo
    /sys/boot
    /sys/dm
    /sys/dm/dm
    /sys/dm/fonts ???
    /sys/dm/init_tmp_dirs
    /sys/dm/input
    /sys/dm/output
    /sys/dm/startup_login.19l
    /sys/env
    /sys/mgrs
    /sys/net
    /sys/node_data
    /sys/types
/sys/{relevant}microcode (some of these beasts have PEB)
    /sysboot

I really want to know if I've omitted anything essential, but I'll
also be glad to hear that I've included too much.

Thank sin advance. I'll summarize any e-mail in a week or so.
