[comp.sys.apollo] DN580T & Cartridge tape drive

FERGUSON@TMASL.EXXON.COM (04/11/89)

I've been trying to use tar on my DN580T 1/4" ctape, and having
numerous difficulties (which you may have read about). Here's my latest:

It turned out that since I was at sr9.7 (no suffixes, just 9.7),
I needed patch number 133 so that I could write tar tapes. Well,

I'm now at 9.7.0.4, and it seems as if I would be able to make tar
tapes if only I could rewind the tapes without crashing the machine.
Any time I do $ rbak -dev c -rewind, the node crashes with a
'Controller timeout' status.

Has anyone seen this before? I'd rather not open a hardware call if
it's only a software problem.

Also, don't you think it's a little silly for a tape controller timeout
to bring down the entire OS?

Thanks for any advice.
