COLLOQUIUM, Tuesday, Oct. 28, 11 am, SF 1101

                            Professor W. Graham
                          University of Waterloo

                      "Legal Protection of Software"

During the past several years, many countries have tried to apply
their copyright laws in various ways to protect computer software. The
notion that a program is a creative work seems to have fairly universal
acceptance, particularly in its written form. However, problems sometimes
arise when the program is contained on other media, and in particular when
it is in ROM, PROM or EPROM memory. In January, APPLE was the plaintiff in
a trial in our federal court, and the judgement upheld APPLE's claims.
This decision is now being appealed by the defendants.

This seminar will outline many of the issues raised during the trial, both
from the point of view of the plaintiff and the defendants.

THEORY SEMINAR, Friday, Oct. 31, 11 am, GB 405

                          Professor Avi Wigderson
                             Hebrew University

"Rubber Bands, Convex Embeddings & Graph Connectivity"

We present a geometric characterization of the vertex connectivity of
a graph. The proof relies on physical intuition. This point of view also
gives faster algorithms to determine the connectivity of a given graph.
