[comp.sys.apollo] Apollo memory upgrades

thompson%animal.decnet@CIM-VAX.HONEYWELL.COM ("ANIMAL::THOMPSON") (05/10/89)

Regarding memory upgrades for the Apollos --
	Apollo memory is more expensive than PC memory. As you mentioned,
it is faster. Faster == Expensive.

	We have used ClearPoint memory for our DN40000s, and have also
installed it in our DN4500. It should also work in 3500s. Talk to
ClearPoint to be sure. They have the nicety of being guaranteed for life.
Apollo memory has the advantage of not invalidating maintenance contracts
(check this out before buying) and of being fixed (replaced) fast if there's
a problem. You send ClearPoint's back, and they send you a replacement.

	HOWEVER, with all this said.... Our Apollo rep just called about
3 days ago.  They're re-pricing some items.  The 4MB boards (for 3500, 4000,
and 4500s) are being dropped (list price) to $2000. The 8MB boards are
being dropped to $4000. (The 2MB DN3000 boards are staying at $2000, he
says....) With a 41.2% decrease in price, they're looking pretty good.
These prices had *better* be list prices; if not, I'll have my sales
rep's head, and then our purchasing dept. will have mine....
