[comp.sys.apollo] Quest for 3-D volume IMage Rendering

FERGUSON@TMASL.EXXON.COM (05/16/89)

In my search for the best 3-D graphics supercomputer, I've seen a number
of good systems. The DN10000 is no exception. The problem is, I need a
library of 3-D volume rendering calls to program with.

NO, I don't have any polygons, nor do I have any geometric model. I have
78,000,000 voxels in a volume image, 512x512x300. The 10000 has a great
architecture, and I'm already an Apollo-fiend, and would like to keep
our hardware on a single platform.

Does anyone know of 3-D VOLUME RENDERING software?
Cognivision is good, but it's a geometric model-based package. They said
they would work with me, but I need working software soon, and don't
want to become a test site for new software.

My Apollo salesman is in search of someone they can hire to port a
software package from some other platform, but if something is running
and can be made available, please reach me soon. Other companies
(Ardent, SGI, Pixar, AT&T Pixel Machines) have all demonstrated
volume rendering of our data.

If you have 3-D volume rendering of opaque voxels, reach me at:

Thanks very much.

Vital Images makes the BEST 3-D package seen yet (well at least I think so).
It is called VoxelView ... currently runs on SGI machines (yes I do have a
10000, but it is a DSP - I DO have several SGI 4D machines though :-).

They are located at

	107 W. Washington
	Fairfield, IA 52556

To quote some of the publicity blurbs ...

" ..With VoxelView, volumes can be rotated interactively and rendering
parameters can be adjusted to highlight internal structures and explore subtle
geometrical relationships.

VoxelView is based on the recently developed 3D graphics technique called
volume rendering which treats objects or phenomena as volume-distributions
instead of polygons as is done in geometrical rendering ..."

Sounds just like what you are after !!

PS we have an image processing research group considering this package for
their 3-D volume reconstruction work
