First off, forgive typos in this note. The vt100 emulator that I'm using for vi does not work. Long login after boot seems to be caused by a problem with initializing some sort of cache. The system routine that hangs is (if I recall correctly) name_$find_uid_lc. Here is an easy way to demonstrate it: boot your system on a ring that contains uncatalogued diskless nodes. Immediately after logging in, do an lcnode. The node will appear to hang. It won't really hang, of course. After a while, the lcnode will complete, and then future lcnodes will work fine. Or, if you wd/cd to something in the // directory immediately after boot, you should see the same sort of hang. Leland Ray UIUC Civil Engineering (217) 333-3821
