I'm a tad skeptical about the established need for a newsgroup for members of Mensa, but assuming for the moment that there is such a need: is there any good reason why it should be a top-level group? Assuming that we want to avoid more inconsistently named newsgroups like net.chess (which should be net.games.chess) and the various scientific groups that should belong to net.sci, wouldn't it be better to think ahead? If a newsgroup is created for members of Mensa, I suspect that members of other organizations will become interested in the same thing. If that is indeed a possibility, maybe we should create a heading to stick such newsgroups under. Net.orgs? Net.club? Net.grp? Or perhaps we could do as has been so often suggested and cannibalize net.social for this purpose. Personally, I think we should all consider net.mensa long and hard before we create it. The burden of proof, as always, rests on those proposing the new newsgroup. But if we do decide to go ahead with a Mensa newsgroup, I think we should consider equally hard that it probably won't be the last of its kind. --- Prentiss Riddle ("Aprendiz de todo, maestro de nada.") --- {ihnp4,harvard,seismo,gatech,ctvax}!ut-sally!riddle

I thought the whole point of mensa was so that these people could get together and discuss highbrow sorts of things without being bothered by the illiterate masses. It's a group of similar people who like to be around their own kind. As such, it seems to me that if a net.mensa were created, it would be subject to the same kinds of heckling that have been occurring in net.motss, net.religion, net.women, and so on. (Mensa isn't real popular with the vocal people on the net, it would seem.) Do the mensa members really want to discuss things in public while being heckled? I would guess not. No, I do not belong to mensa. I've been invited but wasn't even interested enough to take the test. Yes, I'm sure I'd pass. Mark Horton

Before anyone creates net.mensa, perhaps someone should check with Mensa about how they feel about such use of their trademark. For example, they do not permit any of their own special interest groups to use the name "Mensa" in part of their names.
