I would like to throw in my 2 cents thoughts about install. I can't speak about stand-alone install, but having a network does not solve any of the problem Richard was talking about, just makes things a little bit better (i.e. no need to fiddle around with tapes). -) Doc is pretty poor, I cannot agree more. I like to know what a program does, you can imagine how I'd love to know about all the install beasties ! -) Another big problem is protections: apparently you get the system shipped on disk installed as 'open'; the only way to close the system now is by invol'ing and re-installing (for stand-alone owners' pleasure), (this is the only way we figured out). -) You customize rc.local et al., install 10.1 and get all of 'em overwritten ! no warning, no anything, just scrapped. -) No info on what should be saved in /install to keep track of what's been installed: I'd like to save all necessary files, say, every night and have a way to run automatically install++ from those files if/when the disk is lost/upgraded/etc. I couldn't find anything clear about that. I was told that everything was gonna be rosy with the new install programs, for the time being this is partially true. On the other side the old install was a series of shell scripts, without doc you could figure out what was happening to your disks (and fix bugs ... :-) Hope this helps in getting a better install++, Achille Petrilli Cray & PWS Operations
