Hi Y'all, My boss has recently asked me to come up with reports about usage of 16 DN4000 Apollo workstations that we support for the School of Engineering. Obviously some accounting software will be nice to have in order to get some data. The only thing that there is on the system that I have found is the printer/plotter accounting. I can handle in some crude way disk usage accounting, just go over each directory of every user and collect the grandtotals. More difficult will be process accounting and for instance, restricting people to use only X Kbytes of disk space. I saw some message here where there was a mention of accouting software. Is it something that Apollo makes and we don't have it ? Or better, is it public domain, or still better, can I use it ? Any responses will be greatly appreciated. This command is documented in the "Managing your BSD software" manual for sys-admins. The man page is in Section 8 and listed under (surprising) /etc/sa. You *don't* need to install the BSD environment to have the accounting facility. fclim --- gbopoly1 % nusvm.bitnet @ cunyvm.cuny.edu computer centre singapore polytechnic dover road singapore 0513. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Add your pet peeve If we think really hard, maybe we can stop this ____! Can someone help Michal? I sez that the sys-admin need not install the BSD environment (when he's installing SR10) to have the /etc/accton facility. Because I have not install SR10, I'm not sure why Michal couldn't find /etc/accton. --------------- Original Message -------------------------------------- From: Merlin The Magician <MICHAL@UKANVAX.BITNET> Subject: RE: Accounting ? Well, there does not seem to be anything like /etc/accton. I came across a three-program accounting env. You have one process sitting in the background and collecting info every X sec. Ther other program signals new users on the system and when users log off. The program was written by Scott (..) from Apollo. The program is unsupported. Is that you have meant by /etc/accton. ? Furthermore, running the above mentioned program couses a 20 fold slowdown, not an acceptable trade-off. Well, I'll look around for the /etc/accton but no clue as to where it can be. Thanks for you input. -Merlin -- +------------------------------+----------------------------------------------+ | Michal Chmielewski \ The inherent vice of capitalism is the | | Academic Computing Services \ unequal sharing of blessings; the | | University of Kansas \ inherent virtue of socialism is the | | Lawrence, KS 66045 \ equal sharing of miseries. | | Internet: michal@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu - Winston Churchill | | BitNet : michal@ukanvax.bitnet \ | +-------------------------------------+---------------------------------------+ ---------- End of Original Message ------------------------------------ fclim --- gbopoly1 % nusvm.bitnet @ cunyvm.cuny.edu computer centre singapore polytechnic dover road singapore 0513. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Add your pet peeve If we think really hard, maybe we can stop this ____! The related executibles are /bsd4.3/etc/accton and /bsd4.3/etc/sa. I am not sure if you have to install BSD environment to get those facilities. -------- liu@alpha.ece.jhu.edu ins_bxl@jhunix.UUCP
