[comp.sys.apollo] rbak/wbak tape format

sahayman@iuvax.cs.indiana.edu (Steve Hayman) (09/20/89)

Anybody know where I can find some documentation on rbak/wbak tape format?

We're dumping a variety of different machines to an Exabyte drive
connected to one of our Suns, and I'd like to be able to make
a list of what files are on the tape. It would be handy to decode
rbak/wbak format without having to ship the contents of the tape
over the network to an Apollo, just so I could get a table of contents.

So, I want to write a little program (on the Sun) to look at the
rbak tape on the Sun and give me a table of contents, but I can't
find any documentation on rbak format. Can anyone help?

Please respond by mail and I'll summarize to the net.

Thanks.

Steve

P.S. In case anyone else is trying to do this sort of thing
("wbak -stdout / | rsh some-sun dd of=/dev/exabyte-tape-drive")
you may find that the 10.1 "wbak -stdout" doesn't actually
write anything to stdout. Use the 10.0 wbak, it works OK.
