Well, we just received our first apollos on campus. I was surprised to discover that there was no 'C' compiler as part of the base distribution. Lex, yacc, etc. are all there--no 'C' compiler. So we're ignorant--but why is this "normal" component of unix missing and what do people do without it? For instance, we expect to attempt porting some fortran programs. The department owning the machine did buy a fortran compiler, but my experience on Masscomps, 3b1's and Ultrix machines leads me to believe that we'll want to write some little 'C' programs to assist in any porting projects. Not only that, but I'd like to think I could put some of the public domain software up on an apollo. Am I dumb or what? -- John Campbell ...!arizona!naucse!jdc CAMPBELL@NAUVAX.bitnet unix?
