I want to thank all people who helped me with this problem, both on the net and with e-mail. I tried to reply personally to each of you but many messages came back. Any way, here is the solution, just in case other people get the same trouble. The problem turned out to be related to the NCS hack Apollo introduced into lpd; for the beast to run, it is necessary that Domain name (//abc) is equal to Tcp name (abc). That's it. Unfortunately we cannot run in this configuration generally, so I had to hack up my machine, giving it another TCP/IP name. The configuration we are running now involves a Sun station that can queue both text and PS files to the Apollo LaserWriter just fine (well, read below :-) I still have a few problems (apollo's lpd logs an error for every remote file it receives from Sun, '/dev/wn0a: no such file or directory', but the job gets printed correctly, another problem comes I guess from Sun that keeps sending the banner page for PS files, even though sh=true, anyway these are details). The best of the whole story is that there is no doc anywhere and that the NCS hack is not described clearly with its implications and benefits (hardly any ???).
