[comp.sys.apollo] Unix remote dump and restore

collins@nvpna1.prl.philips.nl (Donal O Coileain) (11/28/89)

Does anyone know if apollo ever plan to support the standard (?)
remote dump and remote restore (rdump and rrestore)?

I ask because under sr10.1 there is a manual page for rmt
(remote magtape protocol module), but no executable, and
rmt is a key element when using rdump and rrestore.

There are two issues here: remote tape use and a dump facility to use
remote tapes. The remote tape issue is pretty easy to resolve if you
have source to 4.3 BSD. /etc/rmt compiles without any problems. I use
rmt to use the the Apollo tape drive from my Mac running A/UX.

For remote dumps, you can use tar or cpio piped into an rsh dd or you
could try to port a version of tar that supports remote tapes (there a
remote tape liblrary posted to the net years ago). If you want to use
rbak/wbak, you'd have to wait for Apollo to support remote tapes. If
you want to port the BSD dump/restore (rdump/rrestore), quit now while
you're still ahead. Dump works by opening the raw device for the
filesystem and reading the file system disk structures (inodes, super
blocks, cylinder groups, etc) directly. To port this to Apollo's disk
structures would be basically a complete re-write.

I am currently running a PD rmt library on our SR10.1 nodes, DN4000 & DN10000.
With the new versions of wbak/rbak there is a option to write stdout and read
stdin. I have combinded these options with a little cat-like routine using the
rmt library to dump 8mm tapes on our Suns from the Apollo. I explained the
complete system about a month ago in this newsgroup.
