[comp.sys.apollo] High-Capacity Storage

SRFERGU@ERENJ.BITNET (Scott Ferguson) (12/16/89)

I just got a sales thing in the mail from MDL Corp., saying they've got
a magneto-optical disk system for the 2500. Anyone know if they've got
any for regular systems (like ones most of us have, 4000's, 4500's,etc)

Also, I'm getting an Exabyte drive for my Ardent, and wouldn't mind having
one on my Apollos as well, because I have an Apollo that's far away, and
I need to move data from it back home on tape. If I had two Exabyte drives
that were compatible, one on Apollos, one on the Ardent, I could throw out
my Fork-lift palet of reel tapes.

Is the helical-scan stuff standard enough to be able to buy drives for two
systems and share tapes? Tar or Cpio formats are preferable, or I could
write my own software to read/write if necessary.

So:

Are ExaByte tapes written with a standard format?
and
Are there affordable erasable-optical and removable systems for other
   than the 2500?

Thanks for tuning in.
