It looks as if the output from the bsd 'man' command consists only of the cat files piped through 'more'. You see all those backspaces executed on your rlogin vt100 terminal instead of properly piped through 'ul' to generate bold and italic (underscored) text. (By the way: a most useful enhancement would be to pipe the text through 'less' instead of 'more', so that you can move back and forth at will if your 'window' is only 24*80.
