[comp.sys.apollo] SR10.1.p passwd program oddities

e07@nikhefh.nikhef.nl (Eric Wassenaar) (12/18/89)

At first I thought I made a mistake, but it is true:
If you, as an ordinary (non-root) user, do an '/bin/passwd otheruser'
the passwd program prompts for YOUR password, not the other's password.
(You probably know your own password, since you just logged in,
but okay, I can understand why it wants to know your password anyway).

The authority to change anything in the rgy database is controlled
by the ownership of the various individual entries (persons, groups,
orgs), and the registry database as a whole (see registry properties).
Be aware that the default ownership of everything is anybody (%.%.%).
This is also true for the pre-defined accounts when you create a new
registry.

Better change the ownership of every individual entry in the rgy
database, or everyone can gain total control.
