[comp.sys.apollo] Miscellaneous questions

lray@CIVILGATE.CE.UIUC.EDU (Leland Ray) (12/31/89)

That reminds me to ask a few miscellaneous questions:

1. I need to read a tape written with wbak on a non-Apollo machine. I
don't want to "dearchive" the tape file, I just need to use a tape
drive to read it that happens to be connected to another machine.
Once read, I had planned to ftp it to an Apollo, and use the
-stdin option on rbak to recover the data.

I hear these tapes are ANSI labelled. Could someone send me enough
information that I can get the file off the tape?

2. Is SR10.2.p presently shipping? If not, is there an expected release
   date?

3. Do the scsi_$ routines shipped with GPIO at SR10.2 also work with
the scsi port on the WD disk controller?

4. Is there a public domain device driver available for a AT bus
parallel port add on (like the Apollo SPE board)? The quality of the
   driver

Thanks for answers in advance.

This reminds me: I have a mysterious card (other than the video card)
in the AT bus of my DN10000, and I think it must be the controller for
the cartridge tape. It is a SCSI controller, no? It seems to have
a port on the back of it, which looks suspiciously like a SCSI
connector. My question-- is this a SCSI card? Given appropriate
drivers, can other SCSI devices be connected to the port? Are
there SCSI disks available for this card? Other SCSI devices. I
know all about Workstation Solutions, INC, but their stuff is awfully
expensive, and they don't offer any educational discounts.

The question:

parallel port add on (like the Apollo SPE board)? The quality of the

should read:

4. Is there a public domain device driver available for a AT bus
parallel port add on (like the Apollo SPE board)? The quality of the
driver is not very important, as long as it compiles and runs at SR10.x.
(in other words, I'll fix the bugs).

Go right ahead and read the wbak-written backup set on your other machine. The
tape 'file' is standard ANSI labeled, and the block size is 8K (8192) bytes.
Be certain to read the blocks in binary mode (as opposed to ASCII or EBCDIC)
so as to prevent data conversion.

My understanding is that they do, and are compatible with those for the
DN-2500.
