[comp.sys.apollo] Hot-Seat Licensing vs. Node-Locking

lori@hacgate.scg.hac.com (Lori Barfield) (01/10/90)

[Excuse me, here, while I pull out my soapbox....]

WHY DON'T *ALL* VENDORS SWITCH FROM USING NODE-LOCKED
   LICENSES TO HOT-SEAT LICENSES INSTEAD?

1: no more paperwork to transfer licenses
2: no more user delays if a CPU goes down (unless it happens to be
the one the executable resides on)
3: no more of users running programs in crp mode from other nodes
4: no more CPU loading on node with license
5: node-locking is a throwback to the Dark Ages of <cringe> mainframing,
when vendors assumed that you only *owned* one computer
6: sheesh, how much harder can it be to write that way?

The one disadvantage of hot-seat licensing I can see is the loss of
the ability for as many users as possible to use a single license.
This only applies to software that doesn't require borrow mode.

Huzzahs to the vendors who have already caught on. (Who are they, they
deserve a public pat-on-the-back....) Hhsssss to those who for
whatever reasons still refuse to convert. (Who are *they*?)

[Now stepping down from soapbox....Aahhh, that feels much better.]
