I would like to thank everybody for their precious suggestions in diagnose my problem. I've got quite a few replies by mail and read a lot from the net. I've solved the problem. And it won't be fair not to share the problem on the net. Here is what actually happened: Someone (I don't know who) killed the link /etc/rc -> /sys/node_data/etc/rc. The rc file happens to be the first file the system looks at upon start up other than init (so its said in the flowchart in one of those manuals). It couldn't find /etc/rc and it reverted to the Phase II Shell. I recreated the link by 'link /etc/rc `node_data/etc/rc', restart the machine and it worked fine again. From what I learn from other people's reply, whenever the system couldn't find anything or something needed are missing, it will go into service mode. Maybe the Apollo people should build some error messages into the OS instead of allowing this 'smooth crash'. Again, I am very gratful for all the responses. I learnt alot just by reading the articles.
