[comp.sys.apollo] cannot remove file

inst182@tuvie (Inst.f.Techn.Informatik) (02/12/90)

Hello!

We have kind of a problem: We had a system crash and now we cannot remove
some directories. Among these is /etc/sys5.3 which we obviously need
to recreate. salvd won't help but exits with the line

?(salvd) "sys5.3" - disk data check (OS/disk manager)

What does this mean? *ANY* hints will be appreciated.

				Thanx in advance,
						mike

This usually means that one or more physical blocks on the disk
have been corrupted.
This also is a sign of deteriorating disks - I'd be very careful
over the next while watching for other such errors.

You can determine the block number by using 'lsyserr'.

Once you know the block number, you should mark these blocks
as BAD-SPOTS (including the block before and after the affected
ones) using the disk formatting routine INVOL.

After adding to the badspot list, simply shutdown, salvol and
reboot the node.
