[comp.sys.apollo] DN2500 configuration questions

stan@toaster.SFSU.EDU (Stan Osborne) (02/17/90)

Background:

We are buying one DN2500 to try out HP/Apollo equipment.
If we like what we find, we will buy alot more over the
next few years. (We have labs we want to fill with Workstations.)

Our budget for this is limited. We would like to not buy
the external SCSI tape drive from HP, as this will cost
us 1,875.50 and 3rd party suppliers can provided similar
equipment for half this price. We would like to use the
money we save to buy as much memory for the system as is
possible.

I am posting this with the hope that someone with first hand
experience with the DN2500 will be able to reply quickly with
concise and useful information.

Questions:

All of these apply only to the DN2500.

1) Does the Workstation Cell come with any memory?

(Our quote defines a Cell as including 68030 processor, power
supply, operating system license and documentation. What
use is a processor without memory?)

2) Is it possible to use 3rd party memory?

3) If it is possible to use 3rd party memory, what are the
    exact specifications for this memory?

4) Is it possible to use 3rd party External SCSI Cartridge Tape?

5) If it is possible to use 3rd party External SCSI Cartridge Tape,
what are the exact specifications for this external tape system?

Additional Comments:

It is our understanding that a large (50+) network of Workstations using
Domain/OS (SR10) requires much less manpower to manage, than networks
using similar Workstations from other vendors. We always try to get
the most for our money. (We have so little of it.) We are not able
to have enough well trained support staff. It seems to make sense
to buy HP/Apollo, even if it were not so nicely discounted to Universities.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to provide feedback.
