SCIENTIFIC COMPUTATION SEMINAR

                    - Thursday, September 17, 1987

Professor Joseph Oliger of Stanford University will
speak on ``Parallelism in Problems of Mathematical
Physics - An Uncertainty Principle''.

TIME: 4:00 PM

ROOM: MC 6091A

ABSTRACT

A physical analogue of the computational processes for
solving partial differential equations will be
developed. Problem dissection will then be discussed
and analyzed in terms of this model. Minimal
information algorithms will be introduced and related
to parallelizable tasks. The maximum utilizable
parallelism can then be related to the maximum
allowable error in terms of an uncertainly principle.
