I find "xwd | xwdtoppm | ppmtopgm | pgmtops" to be a FAR better utility.
these utilities are part of the standard X11R4 pbmplus release and can
be ftp'd from expo.lcs.mit.edu. If you do not have net-access, and would 
like these I would be glad to uucp you a copy of the binaries and/or source.

Again, the pbm utilities are FAR more flexable.
