[ont.events] Fractal Exhibition at Ontario Science Centre

ron@oscvax.UUCP (10/22/87)

There is a temporary exhibition at the Ontario Science Centre which may
be of interest to people on the network. It is called 'Frontiers of
Chaos'. It is basically a large number of computer generated prints of
various types of fractals (Mandelbrot Sets, Julia Sets, etc.). These
are all high quality prints of different portions of these various sets.
In addition to the static images the OSC has added some interactive
exhibits of our own which try to show various examples of what chaos and
fractals are. Here is a copy of a press release about the show. I hope
this gets out fast enough so that people get it before the Mandelbrot
talk.

October 9, 1987 - January 3, 1988
FRONTIERS OF CHAOS
The Beauty of Fractals

This exhibit presents an array of unexpectedly varied and intricate
computer-generated designs, which not only serve to illustrate recent
discoveries in modern mathematics, but also offer the viewer a new
aesthetic experience.

Friday, October 23, 7:30PM
Fractal Theory and Implications
lecture by / discussion with
BENOIT B. MANDELBROT

Professor Mandelbrot, the distinguished Harvard scholar, who developed
fractal geometry, discusses the discovery of the "Mandelbrot Set" and
the history of fractal geometry.

Sunday, November 8, 1:30PM
Fractal Music with BRUNO DEGAZIO

Mr. Degazio demonstrates the composition of computer music based on the
mathematics of fractals. To be followed by a concert of fractal music.

Sunday, November 29, 2:00PM
What's a Fractal Anyway?
lecture by / discussion with
HEINZ-OTTO PEITGEN

Professor Peitgen of the University of Bremen, W. Germany, and U.C.
Santa Cruz, USA, unravels for us the scientific secret behind fractals
and helps us understand how advanced mathematics is changing our view
of the world. Heinz-Otto Peitgen is the author (with P.H. Richter) of
the book entitled 'The Beauty of Fractals' (Springer-Verlag, NY, 1986).
He also co-organized the exhibit which is presently on view at the OSC.
