[comp.sys.apollo] problems with lpd

crh@APOLLO.ENG.OHIO-STATE.EDU (Charlotte Hawley) (07/18/90)

After three attempts with hotline, I am begging for
help from the net.

Since installing 10.2 (using UNIX 4.3) on my DN3500,
I can't get my postscript printer (Apple IINTX) to
work. I am running lpd and using Adobe postscript
since I have a mixed environment of Unix workstations.
At 10.1, everything worked fine.

The problem is that it will print 3-4 pages at most
and then the printer quits. The error log has the following error:

%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: > 214 ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%

(the number 214 changes in each message).

I moved the printer to a Sun workstation, and the printer
works fine. I then moved the printer from the 3500 to a
new DN2500, and got the error again. I installed recommended patches
with no results. After trying everything I can imagine, I finally
lowered the baud rate to 1200, and the printer works on both the
DN2500 and the DN3500. It's driving everybody crazy, and I get
double "whammy".

Any suggestions with be most appreciated.

We had the same error message when connecting a laserprinter to an
Apollo some time ago, but now we have it running (LaserWriter IINTX,
DN3500,SR10.2, prmgr/prsvr).
The fact that lowering the baud rate makes your printer work leads me
to think that the reason for your problem seems to be the configuration
of your serial port e.g. the handshaking protocol. If you're using
'software'-handshaking via XON/XOFF characters (default for the
LaserWriter IINTX) try the following:

   /com/tctl -default // resets sio1
/com/tctl -nosync -insync // input sync

This lets the printer controll the synchronization of the transmission
(assuming that you use sio1 and 9600 Baud). If you don't have an AEGIS
environment, you'll probably have to use the UNIX command 'stty', but
I don't know much about that (though I'm not an AEGIS fan).
