          Abstract

Recently, CDC announced their first ``departmental'' computer,
the CYBER 930, which complements their large computer product
line. Utilizing densely packed CMOS gate array chips, the new
CYBER 930 will link PCs, workstation and minicomputers in the of-
fice to larger mainframes and supercomputers.

The CYBER 930 was developed by Control Data Canada. In addition
to the mainframe design, system design and integration, CDC's
Mississauga facility has a mandate to manufacture the CYBER 930
          for the world market.

Mr. Tavchar was one of the designers of the CYBER 930. The talk
will provide an overview of the CYBER 930 (product characteris-
tics, architecture, technology (VLSI gate arrays), and packag-
ing); the development process (defining the product, tools
development and selection, design process, and starting up
manufacturing); and manufacturing considerations (problems of
volume production, working with vendors, robotics, assembly and
          test, and customer installation).
