I have been informed that there is no prohibition or restriction on GNU utilities to produce binaries for product shipments by HP. In fact, several HP entities are doing just that. There is also no blanket prohibition within HP on shipping GNU, perl or other related software to HP customers. We realize that many of our customers, particularly the ones who are active on the net, would be willing to accept this software without HP support or warranties. However, HP must consider all its customers, many of whom have different support expectations. Since people with access to the net can easily get perl and GNU software via ftp or mailservers, and in fact could access newer versions faster than HP could ship media, making this software available directly from HP has not been as high a priority as other things we've been working on.
