[comp.sys.apollo] DN3500 install -- /etc/llbd

hdtodd@eagle.wesleyan.edu (08/06/90)

We have not previously used Apollo systems. We recently
received a DN3500, and I began installing the software using MINST. I
configured the system as a BSD system. After feeding it the OS tapes, I
rebooted and followed the directions to establish the registry. The
command
	/etc/server -p /etc/llbd
failed, because, indeed, llbd did not exist. The 3500 will be working
with some 2500's, also just acquired.

Am I correct that I need to install the registry & daemon? If
so, is the absence of llbd in /etc a trivial mistake I can fix quickly
or should I go through the complete installation process again?

	Thanks for your help.

There is a tyopgraphical mistake in the installation
manual. The NCS servers are located in /etc/ncs, not
in /etc.

You do need the llbd and it just happens to be in /etc/ncs (took me some
time before I found out). You do not need a rgyd on every machine.

Unless I'm mistaken, llbd (and glbd) are located in /etc/ncs, not in /etc.
They certainly are on our systems, and in the <AA>, the ncs directory is
present underneith etc as well (not a guarantee of the structure after
installation, but a reliable indicator nonetheless).

You only need to start it if you have NCS services going. Of course,
the registry is NCS based, so unless you have a stand-alone machine,
you'll probably want it. We run llbd on all nodes.

I wanted to thank all those who responded so quickly to point out that
llbd is really in /etc/ncs -- what a wonderfully supportive group! I
probably could have figured it out eventually, but the help from this group
saved me considerable time and frustration.

Thanks for your help -- hope I can contribute, too, eventually!
