[comp.sys.apollo] Problem with emt

panguyen@vela.acs.oakland.edu (panguyen) (08/07/90)

I currently encounter a serious problem with emt. If anybody thinks
that this is a current bug, please post a message on CSA.
Scenario:
I'm logging on to my school's Ultrix system from my workstation at work
via a Hayes modem. I am unable to use cu nor tip commands (i.e. the sys. administrator did not know how to set up the modem properly). Currently, I am
using emt.
Problem:
Here are some of the problems that I have experienced:
- If I donot use /com/vt100 before execute /com/emt, for every commands
that I execute, the commands will be echoed back to me and then excuted
by the remote host. It is very annoyed at time .
- If I go into rn (readnews), emt will act strangely. I have to
press RETURN after every rn commands (like =, q, or n).
- The readnews command q (for quit) is acting weirdest ! If I press q
and RETURN, it will terminate the current article, BUT at the same time,
it will go to the next article. However, if I type "quit" and then
press RETURN, it will unsubscribe me from that newsgroup.
Questions:
Can anybody show me how to set up my modem so that I can use either cu
or tip to dial up to my school's Ultrix ?
Can anybody tell me what I have done wrong with my emt ?
I'll really appreciate any answers from any netters.

Peter,

It sounds like you are running emt in "cooked" mode, which means that it
does local echo and line buffering. Try typing "raw" in the emt window
after you invoke emt and before you hit F1 to go into emt. This will
cause emt to send each character out the line immediately and to not be
locally echoed.

If this doesn't take care of your problem, I'll need more info to help.
