[comp.sys.apollo] Netpower: Customer support campaign FTP archive

jimr@maths.su.oz.au (Jim Richardson) (08/22/90)

Materials for the HP Open Letter are now available by anonymous FTP from
maths.su.oz.au (129.78.68.2), in directory netpower. Australian ACSnet
sites may access the files via fetchfile or netfetch as well.

Apologies for the continuing delay in the release of the list of signatories.

Here is the README file from the netpower directory.

                      HP/APOLLO "NETPOWER" CAMPAIGN 1990

                                  Background

The "netpower" campaign grew out of discussions in comp.sys.apollo which
indicated considerable dissatisfaction with HP/Apollo customer service.
The discussions were distilled into an "Open Letter" to HP, with the aim
of encouraging HP to improve its services by allocating more resources to
Apollo support, and by using the Internet, in particular, by facilitating
email contact with customers (e.g., bug report submission and response),
by posting more articles to Usenet news, and by setting up a public FTP
archive of customer support materials. The Open Letter argues that such
steps would be permitted under network usage guidelines, and would be of
benefit both to customers and to HP.

Signatures for the Open Letter were collected, and it is intended to send
copies to HP.

The following files are available. All files with names ending in .Z are
compressed and should be FTPed in binary mode.

                            The Open Letter itself

open_letter.tex.Z LaTeX source for the Open Letter
fancyheadings.sty.Z LaTeX option file for open_letter.tex
a4.sty.Z LaTeX option file for A4 paper

open_letter.ps_us.Z PostScript version for US paper size
open_letter.ps_a4.Z PostScript version for A4 paper

open_letter.txt.Z plain text version of the Open Letter

Please choose the most appropriate files and retrieve only those, to lesssen
load on the Australia-US IP link, which is permanently saturated.

If LaTeX is available at your site, the best way to generate a printed copy of
the open letter is to retrieve the file open_letter.tex.Z. It uses the option
file fancyheadings.sty, which is not part of the original TeX distribution, so
fetch fancyheadings.sty.Z as well if it does not already exist at your site.
For printing on A4-sized paper (outside the US) you may want a4.sty also.

If you don't have LaTeX but do have a PostScript printer, fetch one of the
files open_letter.ps_{a4,us}.Z, depending on the paper-size you want.

Otherwise, use the plain text version open_letter.txt.Z.

                            The list of signatures

*** NOT YET READY ***

Signatures.Z plain text list of signatories
Signatures.ps_us.Z two-column PostScript for US paper
	Signatures.ps_a4.Z two-column PostScript for A4 paper

Sorry, but the signature list is still not available, because of a delay in
the European collection reaching me, probably caused by mail problems. The
plain text version will be posted to comp.sys.{apollo,hp} as soon as possible,
and the PostScript versions will be available here for FTP.

At 22 August, excluding the missing European list, there are 55 separate
signatures containing 64 names from 45 institutions and companies in eight
countries.
