[comp.sys.apollo] X Windows and Motif

markd@silogic.UUCP (Mark DiVecchio) (08/22/90)

Has anyone done any work with X on the Apollo Workstation? I recently
loaded the Apollo X tape X11 R3 v1.1. It works well and I have been
able to write a few simple programs. Performance is even decent on the
DN3000 which I am using.

It's nice but I think I'm missing something and that something may be
Motif. The release contained the Xt Toolkit which included about 6-8
simple widgets. They don't have the 3-D pushbuttons or other more
sophisticated widgets.

Do I really need the Motif software to do any useful work? Apollo sells
it for a lot more than X itself cost.

Insight would be appreciated.

The 6-8 widgets without the 3-D look are the "Athena" widget set, which is
a standard part of any X-Distribution since X 11.0. I have used these
extensively, but only because it was the only game in town 2 years ago.
Since Motif 1.0 is now available on Apollos you should start with it.
Motif has much more future than the Athena widget set. Both Athena and
Motif are based on the same set of Intrinsics (Xt Toolkit) (right now there
is a slight version problem between X11.3 Xt and Motif 1.0 Xt).

You can do "Useful work" with Athena and Xlib, but if you are trying to do
any reasonably complex user interface, go with Motif. There are many more
widgets and more resources (options) available.
