[comp.sys.apollo] Again problems with priorities!

root@eba.eb.ele.tue.nl (The one and only bug) (10/19/90)

Oke, here it is again! The system really puts his/her foot in
my mouth.

We're running SR10.2/bsd4.3.

Our fastest stations ussually get hoged by user who want to have
a fast compile/make job. They jun run them on the fastest systems.

Now to circumvent this, I thought of making the inetd deamon
of lower priority. So 'nice /etc/inetd' in my 'rc' file should work!!??

Well you've guessed nearly right. The telnetd gets forked with the
nice priority, but then when a 'csh' is created then it has again
the ussual priority. I'm sure that this is again a feature
which is so desired by HPollo, but not by me.

Another nice item:
We're using the DPCI system. Now there are some things which
I suggest that would be nice to change. Some are pretty essential
in my eyes, other are just nice gimmicks.

So I mailed an APR, and never got a reply (Sounds familiar :-) )
Then I asked my sales rep, to check what Hpaollo did with the APR.
So he took a day or two(Thanx Frans), and now I know
How and What the response center works.

The one real bug was fixed in the next release. Meaning that they'ed
run the next version, and it did not show the bug. Oke :-)

The problem with a vt100 emulator going beserk over long lines,
was handled with the remark that the product acted according its
specifications.

Well if that the case, how about correcting the specs AND the
product! *-)

Other remarks like possible enhancing the product with usefull
feature got about the same remark.

Thiswas not why I mailed an APR, I even stated at the top of the APR
in clear text that it contained suggestions for possible IMPROVEMENT
for the product.

Well this is the reason to go for mostly PD stuff, instead of HPollo stuff:
 1) You didn't pay for it.
 2)	It gives you better service, because the authors care about
	their 'child'.
 3)	You get the sources, so if you need to patch you can do
what ever you want with it.
This is how I got ride of the 'none' organisation in 'rn'.

Having written all this I feel my adrenaline going down, So if I
wrote something which anoys you please let me know or flame.

Willem Jan Withagen.

PS: The problem actually is that I like the Apollo's better then
    the Suns.
