Hi, We have a problem using tar and compress on a directory generated by the "piced" software from Mentor Graphics. Scenario : $ tar Acf - picture | compress > picture.tar.Z - Tar the directory ( picture ) using the -A switch to conserve the APOLLO types. - Compress the resulting file. $ rm -r picture $ zcat picture.tar | tar Axf - - Uncompress it. - Untar it ( with -A switch ). - The file type was not correctly restored and the file picture/sheet1.pic_$X has the "unstruct" type !! - Running PICED on the resulting directory gives us a strange APOLLO status code... It looks like unstruct type bothers quite a lot Mentor. - We tried to change the type to "rec" with the obty command, but it didn't seem to work. To be precise, the result is the same if the file as the unstruct type or the rec type ... - Impossible to re-invoke piced on the resulting directory with the following error message : $ piced picture PicED Version 7.0_1.8 Wednesday, April 5, 1989 11:21:50 pm (PDT) # ! As a workaround, you might think about using wbak -stdout/rbak -stdin instead of tar. I think you should also submit this as a problem to Context, tho they may have fixed this already. ---- Dave Hayes dave@vlsi-mentor.jpl.nasa.gov {ucbvax,ames}!elroy!vlsi-mentor!dave "Attempt to find truth by realizing that it will generally find YOU."
