[comp.sys.apollo] Problem with bash from an xterm on Apollo

sridhar@surya.usc.edu (M. A. Sridhar) (10/04/90)

I run X11R3 on an Apollo DN3000 with Domin/IX 10.2, and I use xterm to log into
a DECstation on the local net. And I built GNU's bash to run on the DECstation.
The problem is that when I run bash, and execute say ls -FC under it, about half
the output does not show up!

But bash behaves just fine when I dial in directly to the DECstation or log
into it directly. This seems to be a problem with Apollo's xterm combined with
bash. Has anyone else seen this? BTW, the version of bash I built is 1.05
with patches, ftp'ed from uunet.uu.net. I tried rlogin'ing to another Sun
workstation that runs bash 1.01, but there things work just fine! I'm puzzled.

Any help is appreciated.

Seems like there are some problems with xterm. When usingan xterm and rlogin to
a MicroVax II running Ultrix-32 V3.1 (Rev. 9) System #4, vi has problems
updating the screen if I insert lines. CTRL-L works OK, still I am once
again having doubts about Apollo software being compatible to _anything_.

I experience the same problems with sr10.2 using xwindows and logging
into sun workstations (with bash). What i don't quite understand is
why this happens with bash and not with ksh/sh/csh???

It is a flow control problem somewhere. I get the same thing when
rlogin'ing into a SONY from an Apollo and running bash. Seems that the
Apollo thinks there's s/w flow control while bash doesn't (something
like this anyway). I DO NOT know the solution - if you find it,
    tell all of us please!

This is unnecessarily harsh on Apollo. The problem is *probably*
in bash, requiring a hack to it. I have no link with Apollo - I
used to use them but now I use a SONY.

No, it is not unnecessarily harsh on Apollo! I'm using the /bin/csh -
so it seems to cause problems not only with bash!!! It's just like
APollo's usual reaction - our OS is OK, your program is broken !!!
If you believe HP/Apollo, just about any program there is, is broken !!!

Describe the set-up completely. I haven't seen any articles in
which you explain exactly what it is. I only saw your latest
article which was a follow-up to a follow-up, and in that no
mention of /bin/csh was made. Our set-up here is:

Apollo DN3500 SR10.2, connected via Ethernet to SONY 1750 BSD4.3.
Log onto Apollo (via DM pad, or xterm, or dial-up), rlogin to
Sony, run bash on Sony and you lose output, but run /bin/sh or
/bin/csh on the Sony and all is OK. Makes no difference what
shell you are running on the Apollo.

Now, my initial reaction was "gee, something's funny with bash!",
not "this Apollo stuff is giving me the shits!".

If you can describe what your set-up is, maybe we can all try to
work out a possible cause + solution.

Im using a DN3010 (diskless), running sr10.2.0.5. I use an xtrem to do an
rsh to a MicroVax II running Ultrix-32 V3.1 (Rev. 9) System #4. The systems
are connected by an ethernet. When I'm using vi, it has problems inserting
new lines. (CTRL-L will work, but is somewhat inconvenient.)

I am experiencing these same problems, but from an apollo to a sun
workstation.
