[comp.sys.apollo] Difference between 3500/3550/4000/4500??

mth@cci632.UUCP (Michael Hickman) (11/02/90)

We have found a good deal (I think) on a DN4000 system. I am not
sure, however, on what the difference is between a 4000 and 4500.
I am also curious about the difference between 3500s and 3550s. We
are going to be upgrading to 5500's (probably) when they are available,
and I want to know if 3500s and 4000s are easy upgrades (non box-swap).
I only have used 3000s and 4500s..

All of our stations are from Mentor Graphics, and the 3500 and 4000 are
not even mentioned in their price list... Can anyone give me some
insight??? Thanks!

                .

3000 and 4000 have 68020/68881 combo sharing same chasis, whereas
3500/3550/4500 have 68030/68882 and sharing same chasis. 3550 is direct
upgradable to 4500 for $6,000 where 3500 is not. Only 3500/3550/4500 can be
upgraded to 5500 (68040 upgrade) for $7,995, $6995, $5,995 respectively. 3000
and 4000 only can be upgraded to 9000/400 series (box-swap) for $13,995 -
$31,995 depending on node type (400t or 400s), display (mono or color) and
disk size (400MB or 660MB). For $2,000 on top of that, you can get either a
25Mhz 040 upgrade on a 400t (to a 425t), or a 33Mhz 040 upgrade on a 400s (to
a 433s).

Make sure you have the latest price book from Mentor, mine is marked as
"Effective July 2, 1990, Revised Sepetember 4, 1990". Hardware upgrade is in
page 29, and 040 upgrade to DN5500 is in page 26.

Our plan is to upgrade all 35x0/4500 to 5500, and the rest to 400. I know
we'll be facing future OSF/? won't run on DN series, but by the time HP is
ready for OSF release, DN series (probably current 040 based 400) will be
obsolete.

I believe similar upgrade program is available from HPollo.

Only 3500, 3550, and 4500 can be upgrade (non box swap) to the 5500.

A 4000 cannot. In terms of upgrading to a 5500, the 3500 and the 3550
are identical.
