From Bob Shaw: Another question.... "What if" ....... someone wanted to use this on Postscript and/or regular ASCII / text files, what would be involved? My particular printer is used for almost everything , including hpgl, bitmap, postscript, ascii etc. I am trying to convert everything possible to lpr. The BSD print server sends all files to the printer EXACTLY as is with the exception of the changes you make in your filter. I am assuming that you are sending the file to an Aegis print server using PC in the printcap entry; if so, the Apollo print server is determining, based on the file sent, what Apollo supplied filter to apply to the file to turn it into the destination type (i.e. Postscript). The problem you will have is that you will want a banner page ahead of the print job, but in order for the apollo print server to print the job correctly, the banner page will HAVE to be in the same format (hpgl, postscript, ascii, etc) as the original print job because the Apollo print server will apply the filter to all of the job. So, unless I'm missing something, you will need to determine the type of file (in your filter) and the append ahead of the file a banner page of the same format. A difficult task I would believe. A Question for any HP reps reading this list...Is there any other way to intercept the USER information from the remote system and have that be the USER NAME printed on the Apollo Print Server Banner Page (without producing a banner page via BSD printcap filter). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Does the Apollo Postscript Print server have an HPGL-->Postscript filter? I'm curious why you couldn't email "directly" to me. I am not sure, but I believe I couldn't respond to you directly because the Apollo sendmail doesn't support MX mail??? Bob, I hope this helps...
