You should be able to restore the registry database from a tar file.  That is
if you created the tar file while the registry server was in maintenance mode.
If you did not put the server into maintenance mode, several key database files
are locked and the tar file is not of much use (since it did not read these
files).  You would have the same problems with wbak.
