We have had a reliably running DN10000 for two years. Around midnight on 31 December it turned itself off, and since then has turned off twice. I have checked that power failures were not the cause. There does not appear to be anything wrong with the power source, wich is shared by two other workstations. The DN10000 has all its fans operating and is quite cool. Jiggling the box and cables has no effect. On the possibillity that the DN10000 is able to shut down by software (does anyone know if this IS possible?), after the second time I turned on the accounting and caught it in the act. However, no jobs other than user and cron jobs ran anything in between shutdowns. Also, there were no unauthorised logins; the only peculiarity in the wtmp file were two logins by users named "|" and "}" about 6 months ago for about 1hr each. I expect this is due to yet another bug in the OS. We have users who run jobs for weeks at a time, so these random shutdowns are a serious irritation. The only conclusion I can come to it either there is a faulty switch or thermostat somewhere, or that the OS is shutting down the machine (we are running 10.2.p). Has ANYONE had a similar problem, or have any hints or suggestions? I am mystified. Thanks, David Harley harley@muon.physics.arizona.edu, harley@arizrvax.bitnet
