[comp.sys.apollo] Alternative OS's for dn4500

newton@ils.nwu.edu (David Newton) (01/23/91)

Are there any alternative operating systems for the Apollo dn4500???
I ask because it appears to be REALLY slow (though it could be the
performance of the Micropolis 150Meg drive, can I bag _any_ drive onto it?)
and interested party cannot afford to upgrade to Sr10.n....
The only other alternative we may have is to take it apart and just have
fun hacking on the system board. (Anyone have a tech. ref. manual they'd
like to sell?)

   btw, it's a dn4500 w/ 4Meg, 150Meg Micropolis drive, Sr9.7, AT co-board,
19" mono, Apollo token-ring setup.

PLEASE!!!! Respond via e-mail as our newsfeed goes down every day or
so. PLEASE!!!! Someone reply, this is getting to be a problem. So sorry
to grovel.

Not having given any explanation of the symptoms, it's impossible
to give you any help. How slow? What are you trying to do at the
time? Is the system page-swapping at the time? How big is your
program? Is it larger than the 4MB of RAM you have?

The 150 MB ESDI disks used in the DN3xxx/4xxx are not particularly
slow as disks go. They are usually Micropolis 1355 drives. You
can upgrade to either a Maxtor EXT-4380 (350 MB formatted), a
Maxtor EXT-4380E (what HP/Apollo refers to as a 350FA [fast access]
drive), or a Micropolis 1558 (also used as the 350FA drive).
If you have the WD7000 multi-function controller, you can upgrade
to the Maxtor 8760 (695 MB formatted) drives.

The Maxtor EXT-4380E, Micropolis 1558, and Maxtor 8760 drives
are all faster than the Micropolis 1355, but unless you know
*why* your system is running slowly, replacing your disk
drive is like replacing your car's muffler because the
car doesn't go fast enough.
