We have practically given up trying to use the apollo's VT100 emulator. The standard solution we recommend to people is to use a xterm window instead. We use the shared X/DM with the X server continuously running in the background with the "s+r-" option and use the DM as the window manager. We have configured all of our workstations this way and have not run into any problems with Mentor software. I also recommend changing the default xterm font to something a little bigger. I set the "xterm*font" resource in my .Xdefaults file to "9x15". Unfortunately, I can think of no good way to keep apollo's VT100 emulator working. Recreating the ptys out of cron or a .login file won't solve the problem if someone is invoking the emulator multiple times in a single login session. Since there are many ways to invoke the emulator, a shell script wrapper around /usr/apollo/bin/vt100 will not work either. With the shared X/DM going away at SR11 in favor of the borrow-mode X11R4 server, HP Apollo should reconsider their resource allocation to fixing the VT100 software, otherwise some sites might have to escalate the problem in order to get reliable VT100 functionality with the DM. *-----------------------------------------------------------------* | Eric Bratton | The University of Michigan | | ericb@caen.engin.umich.edu | #include <std.disclaimers> | *-----------------------------------------------------------------*
