[comp.sys.apollo] Update: Print-servers

thompson@PAN.SSEC.HONEYWELL.COM (John Thompson) (01/31/91)

Hi again --

First, thanks to Dave Funk and to HP/Apollo's John Mandler for their replies
to my print-server problem. It's now _much_ closer to solved. I'm hitting
the net again for help with the last little part of the problem.

Review:
I have a 42" Versatec plotter, an IKON 10092 controller, an Aegis print-server,
and Cadence plotting software. The print-server works fine, and the plotting
software works fine, except that it insists on acquiring the /dev/versatec
device. Sending the plot to a file, and then 'prf -trans' that file wasted
lots and lots of paper.

Partial Soln:
It turns out that with transparent mode, the prsvr leaves the plotter in
'text' mode rather than 'plot' mode. BUT... here's a new prf option at 10.3
(that didn't make it into the release notes) which allows you to set it when
printing. The option is '-vers_pp plot' (don't know the argument for text,
but that's default, anyway). With this option in hand, I re-tackled the
problem, and now we get the plots coming out almost perfectly.

Remaining Problem:
The plots come out 'skewed'. Each raster-pass (about 1/4") is fine, but the
following 'line' is right-shifted about 5/16 of an inch. I have used the
configuration file to set all margins to 0; I have changed the page_width
from 42" to 44" (and bumped the length up to 20 feet). I have had banners
on and banners off, logo defined and logo 'none'.
I have set up the prf command to specify no margins, and to change the pitch
to 12 (which I expected would have no effect). I haven't tried setting wrap
off, because that's the default behavior. I'm about ready to recommend that
they hire someone to carefully cut and paste the lines together.... :-(

Crude example of how the output looks. The following _should_ be rectangles:

  ######### +----------+
   ######### | |
    ######### | |
     ######### +----------+

Any suggestions?
Once again, thanks to those who got me this far. I love the net and its people!

Thanks to all who care
