[comp.sys.apollo] SR10.X

UMeyer@DGIHRZ01.BITNET (02/11/91)

We are still using SR9.7.1 and want to make an upgrade
to SR10.x . There are some problems:
- I heard that SR10.x needs a lot of disk space (>150 MB).
Is that true ? Can it be used on machines with MSD-170M
  disks ?
- The money: even for a university they want approx.4000$
for the cartridges and documentation. Has anyone succeeded
in receiving a cheaper upgrade ?
- Performance: What is the current version? Does it contain
major bugs ? Advantages compared with SR9.7.1 ?
I appreciate any help (and comments) on these questions !

Yes, it can take up a lot of space. For 10.3, the space ranges
from about 75MB for a small Aegis-only load to 155MB for all 3 O/S
flavors (large). There is also a Medium load, and you can select
any combination of Aegis, BSD, and SysV. However, you don't
need to load the full O/S on every node in the network. We have
a small number of disks which have everything (the Authorized-Area
nodes), and everybody else links a lot of stuff to them. It's set up
to link through a /links directory on the node, so if an AA goes
belly up, we can easily change all the links in a feww minutes. By
linking out a lot of s/w, we cut the O/S, compilers(3), DSEE, DPAK,
Dialog, and Omniback load down to about 45MB per node. So, yes,
you can still use the 146MB disks (although we're trying to get rid
of them).

Yuck! We pay maintenance, so I don't know how much they'd ask for.
(Personal flame -- it seems unfair that universities sit around
whining when they don't get their 95% discounts)

10.3 is the current version. It seems pretty good, 'though we
haven't thrashed it completely.

Better TCP/IP TCP/IP still gives hassles.

Slow nodes get slower (4MB is tiny)
