[comp.sys.apollo] Problem booting dn3500 stand-alone with sr10.3

jaan@nmpbas.nmpcad.se (Jaan Haabma) (02/01/91)

We have installed sr10.3 on a DN3500-M9-19-R-8 (+8Mb), i.e.
a dn3500 with a disk of size 660Mb (formatted, from Apollo).
When you try to boot it off its own local disk, it crashes
before it even gets to the boot_shell, with something like:
"FAULT IN DOMAIN/OS: 3C4F1466: SR:2708 PC:3C4D2814 FF1 0010 [U]
CRASH_STATUS 00120002 PS 3C427A9A PID 001 (-- means " Illegal
instruction (OS/fault handler)").

The interesting things is that it boots disk-less off
a sr10.3 (dn4000) partner node, and then the disk can be
mounted without any problem. It also boots off its own disk
(at least until boot_shell, futher would not be meaning-
full to try ...), if you just manually put ("patch")
back a sr10.1 /sau7/domain_os (and map) file. The local disk has
otherwise exatly the same software (/com/cmt on /sys, /*,
/etc, /sau7).

HP local service rep's have told us to reinstall sr10.3,
and also done so by them self once also, but obviously this
did not help.

If You have any hints, or have such a configuration running
with sr10.3, please send me a MAIL. If this turns out to
be a sr10.3 problem, I'll summarize to the net.

We ran our DN3500 with the 697 MB Maxtor 8760E (ESDI interface) disk, the
WD7000 controller, 8 MB RAM, 19" color 1024x800 (E series) monitor, and
cartridge tape under SR10.3 during the beta test period with no errors
related to booting the machine (only with the DM graphics :-{ ). You
mention that you have a 660 MB disk. What model is it? Is it connected
to the SCSI port of the WD7000 or the ESDI port? (the SCSI port is the
one near the back panel of the board; the ESDI port(s) are near to the
middle of the top of the board).

Try booting the machine diskless from the SR10.3 boot tape. Shut
the machine down, type DI C to set it to boot from the cartridge tape
drive, and then type EX DOMAIN_OS to load up SR10.3 (this may wind up
asking you if you want to replace the current S/W on the hard disk).
If your disk is really a 660MB SCSI disk, there could conceivably be
a bug in the disk driver code. I think most of the beta-test sites
were running 155/348/697 MB ESDI disks at the time the beta-test of
SR10.3 was conducted.

Thanks for all suggestions and replies. This turned out to
be a HARDWARE PROBLEM, not showing itself when booting with
a pre sr10.3 /sau7/domain_os. Replacing the 8760EF (ESDI, "fast")
disk and INVOL'ing it with either sr10.1 or sr10.3 invol
made everything work.
