[comp.sys.apollo] su and DM fonts

etb@milton.u.washington.edu (Eric Bushnell) (03/22/91)

I couldn't remember how to get mail to one of those darn
! paths, so I'll post this response to Mr Carlson's questions
about su and DM fonts.

In article <175@ladwp> you write:
>At SR10.2 we were able to 'su new_user' and new_user's .kshrc or .profile, I'm
>not sure which, would be run automatically. This changed with the installation
>of 10.3 and we now laboriously type '. $HOME/.kshrc' to establish a usable

su - userid does a "full login," i.e. it changes to the home directory and
sources .login or whatever. I think this behavior is supposed to be a
feature. It allows you to become root and stay in a current directory of
interest, or do a full login.

Only members of group 0, wheel, should be able to su root. You can
edit the members of the group in edrgy.

As for the DM font, here's how I did it. More knowledgeable folk will
supply details and corrections.

The DM font load command is "fl /sys/dm/fonts/font_name,"
which sets the font *for subsequent windows*. The fonts are in
/sys/dm/fonts, I think. If you issue this command during a session, it affects
pads opened *after* the command.

There's a DM startup file, `node_data/startup.xxx, where xxx is
the display type. There you can also specify the size and postion of the DM
i/o windows, I mean pads. 8-) Then you have to
restart the DM to get it to read that file. "Exit" at the login prompt
should bring you down to the phase II shell, then "go" will restart the
DM. Or do a full reboot.

If you put an "fl" command in /sys/dm/startup_login.xxx, the font will
be used for user pads, but not for the DM windows (I think).

I made some of these changes to some of my nodes a while back,
but I don't remember all the details.

Anyway, I hope some of this is helpful.
